Heart Attack-Epilogue
By now, you must have obtained a fairly good idea about ischaemic heart disease, i.e., angina pectoris and heart attacks; how these conditions are investigated, diagnosed and treated by doctors. You have learnt that IHD is caused by the clogging of the arteries of the heart by fatty deposits, thereby obstructing the flow of blood in thee arteries. The prevention of heart disease lies in preventing the clogging of these arteries. Some of the factors responsible for heart attacks cannot be helped. For instance, you cannot help aging nor can you help being a male, if you are one, nor can you have any choice over your parentage and heredity. But you can do a lot to control and possibly eliminate risk factors such as cigarette smoking, consumption of animal fats, obesity, stress, high blood pressure, diabetes and excess of alcohol. There is the good news for the cigarette smokers. If they stop smoking cigarettes, their susceptibility to heart attacks drops down to about the same level as that of a non-smoker within a year or two. So, better stop smoking forthwith. Reduce your weight to the ideal level. Cut down animal fats and start using vegetable oils as a cooking medium. Avoid fried food totally. Cut down on red meat, if you are a non-vegetarian and go in for fish. A vegetarian diet with fresh vegetables and fruits would prove highly beneficial. Perform exercise regularly, compatible with your age and physical capacity. Avoid stress, loss of temper and working against time. Stop looking at your watch too often, and make yourself a little free from avoidable tension. Maintain a steady moderate pace of work. Cultivate methods of relaxation like meditation. Slow down your pace of life as age advances, yet remaining active till the end. Reduce alcohol intake. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, keep them under control with the guidance of your doctor. Remember that these diseases last lifelong and so will be their management.
