Cardiac Disorder- Misconceptions
Hear of heart disease can induce untoward symptoms. A death in the family due to heart attack is not an uncommon cause for this fear. The introvert, maladjusted and neurotic individuals are particularly prone to such apprehensions.
What are the common symptoms ?
The common symptoms are palpitations and chest pain of non-cardiac origin.
What are palpitations and how are they produced in normal people?
Palpitations are pounding or fluttering sensations in the heart region and are due to consciousness of heart action. Normally, people are unaware of their heart beat. However, normal people can experience palpitations at certain times; for example, after intense physical exercise or sexual intercourse, when the heart rate goes up considerably. But the maladjusted or neurotic individuals may experience the symptom at near normal rates of less than 100 per minute.
What are the abnormal ways in which palpitations are produced?
Palpitations can be experienced when the rhythm of the heart is disturbed or when its rate becomes too rapid. These disturbances of rhythm may be the result of some organic disease of the heart, or they may occur without a known cause. This is especially true of extrasystoles ( extra beats) which can appear with or without an underlying heart disease, and can be precipitated by such items of food as tea or coffee. While some patients may not even be aware of their existence, others may experience distressing fluttering sensations with no underlying heart disease to account for it. Consequently, the fear of heart disease may become intense.
