Sex After Heart Attack

A popular myth which has been going around in our country is that after the age of 50 for men and after menopause in women, all sex life comes to an end. While there is no doubt that as age advances, the physical capacity declines and so does the frequency of the sex act, it is certainly not true that after 50 there is no sex life.

Is there anything wrong in indulging in sexual activity by the elderly?
Unfortunately, in our country, the sex act has been equated with base and vulgar activities, and not looked upon as a normal human function like eating and working. Celibacy has been eulogized and put on a premium. The result is that the elderly couples feel guilty while indulging in normal sex life. The guilt complex may be responsible for a lot of marital unhappiness, because it may lead to unsatisfying sex. It is time that, we as a nation, realise that sexual activity within the confines of the home is like any other human activity. You can and should indulge init without feeling guilty about it, at any age and to whatever extent your physical capacity and general health permit you.

Do you mean to say that there can be unrestrained sexual activity during the later years?
A normal sex life can and should be enjoyed during the later years of your life, though perhaps with a progressively decreasing frequency and intensity, provided both the husband and wife maintain good health, are capable of physical activity and possess the capacity. It should be remembered that a normal sex act demands a healthy body and a healthy mind.

How do you ensure this physical capacity?
Your physical capacity to a large extent depends upon the health of your heart and lungs. If you wish to continue enjoying sexual life till late in life, keep your heart in order and stay healthy. The chapter on ‘Prevention’ will help you to keep your heart and body healthy.

Are there any precautions to be observed?
The precautions necessary are broadly the same as for any other physical activity during the advancing years. Any activity which causes abnormal symptoms such as pain in the chest, breathlessness or undue weakness has to be avoided.
